In The Course Of Surgery

There are a few basic principles which one would be expected to follow during & after cosmetic surgery.

It is vital for a patient to abide by the preoperative and postoperative directions given in order to achieve a most favorable result. The most imperative benefit of cosmetic surgery is that it is performed mostly on healthy individuals. Still scars are the unavoidable consequence of surgery since they are the body's natural reaction in the curative route. Placing surgical incisions along natural tension lines and within natural skin folds will be beneficial as will particular care in wound closure technique. Many other factors including skin color and texture, heredity, age, location and skin care have a great bearing on the final appearance.

It takes a typical of 6-12 months and occasionally longer for a scar to "mature". Hideous scars may be improved by changing their width, length, direction or plane. More than one surgical procedure is frequently necessary. Radiation therapy to the scar or intradermal steroid injections can also be useful in some cases. None of these procedures are executed unless noticeable progress is contemplated. More recently pressure on hypeotrophied scars or keloids has been found to have beneficial effects. Properly applied cosmetics might be also necessary for concealing a scar.

At the Plastic Surgery Institute of California located at Beverly Hills & Los Angeles, we have a squad of first-rate doctors committed to produce the finest achievable results.

Chemical Peels Or Chemabrasion

Chemical Peels are done for abolition of faint wrinkles in the nonappearance of gross sagging of the facial skin. Chemical Peels or Chemabrasion is applied to the entire face or in portions, as needed.

Chemabrasion is also indicated for unusual skin pigmentations or, phony lesions and capillaries. Light skinned people are the finest contenders.

A combination of different chemicals can be used to complete the peel:

1) Phenol peel:
The procedure of applying a solution of a prepared Phenol, under heavy sedation results in "peeling" of the upper layer. This creates contraction and smoothing of the skin. A special tape face mask is applied and left for two days when the patient is seen again. After teasing off the tape, an antiseptic powder is applied over the treated area for a couple of days forming a thick crust. Special creams are used then to soften this crust which falls off about 7 days following the operation and a new pink healthy skin is seen under it. Cold cream or moisturizer is then used to cover the delicate skin. Cover-up make up containing a sun screen can be used 10 days post-operatively. The skin will remain pink for several weeks and abstention from sun exposure is mandatory. People with darkly pigmented oily skin are warned about unfavorable discoloration and scarring.

2) TCA peel:
For lesser wrinkles, this peel is faster healing, less painful, and does not interfere with the capacity of the skin for pigmentation.

3) Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, or Retinoid compounds:
These are superficial peels and can be performed by a trained technician under medical supervision.

The Plastic Surgery Institute of California carries out Chemical Peels or Chemabrasion, under expert supervision of Board Certified plastic surgeons at their centers in Beverly Hills, Huntington Beach, Los Angeles, Newport Beach and Pasadena
